Asheville, North Carolina

The landscape is the largest room in the house.

Stonebrook is a design and build studio for terraces, fire courts, and kitchens with no walls. We draw the whole property first, then build it in stone, timber, water, and light.

Disciplines

Six disciplines, one drawing set

Every project begins as a plan of the whole property. Then we build in order: hardscape, structure, water, planting, light.

  • Stone

    Patios & Stonework

Bluestone, fieldstone, and granite terraces set on deep, properly drained base work, laid to hold their lines through mountain winters.

  • Timber, Steel

    Outdoor Kitchens & Pergolas

Masonry counters, built-in grills, and timber or steel shade structures, proportioned to the house rather than bolted beside it.

  • Fire

    Fire Features

Wood-burning and gas fire courts, sculptural bowls, and seat walls that turn the coldest month into an outdoor season.

  • Paper

    Landscape Design

Grading, circulation, and planting plans drawn for this valley's soil and light, delivered as documents a crew can actually build from.

  • Water

    Water Features

Fountains, basins, and recirculating streams engineered quietly: hidden vaults, clean edges, water you hear before you see.

  • Brass, Light

    Landscape Lighting

Low-voltage light placed for the view from inside the house as much as the path beneath your feet. Warm, shielded, unobtrusive.

The Studio

Built slowly, on purpose

Most outdoor projects fail in the first drawing, not the last course of stone. We take fewer commissions, plan each one completely, and stay on your property until it is finished.

  • One project at a timeOur crew is on your site, not split across five others. Work starts, continues, and ends.
  • Drawings before shovelsScaled plans and material samples in hand before the first pallet arrives.
  • Materials for the mountainsStone, timber, and fixtures chosen for freeze, thaw, and shade, not for the showroom.
  • A tidy site, every eveningTools stored, paths clear, spoil hauled. You live here while we build.
  • One point of contactThe person who drew the plan answers the phone during the build.
